Wine Country: Beaune is Bountiful

Arriving in Beaune at market time on beautiful afternoon
IMG_6429
Beaune is ridiculously charming town, with charming ladies

The evening glow along the ramparts. The first Duke of Burgundy probably climbed that tree

A romantic couple sitting in park anticipating a lovely evening of food, wine and good company

Our amazing hosts were Denis and Susan, friends of Rolf and Cindy via Nantucket days. Here is Denis taking us around the vineyards of Montrachet. Yup…Montrachet.

Les Caves de Denis: “Taryn, this is only for loyal Red Sox fans, but you can look at the label.”

Denis emerges from the cave with more liquid gold

A special feast with warmest couple from Beaune to Nantucket. These are sister towns thanks to Denis who started the Nantucket Wine Festival.

What can be better than discussing wine, politics and life over cheese and dessert?

Susan and Denis have a beautiful home in town. It is adjacent to the Alex Gambal winery. Susan is a great gardener whose standards meet that of Bourgogne wines.

A magical day in the valley

Denis showing us the geographical secrets of Bourgogne.  And where to avoid the police with ray guns.

If prison means Puligny-Montrachet I’ll take it

Here’s the hectare we bought for Téa’s dowry

Traveling in style to lunch
IMG_6477
Relais et Chateau in Levernois. Unreal.  Téa declares wedding will be here.
IMG_6480
Can you believe this day?
IMG_6495
Post-prandial activity: blow guns.  Téa is a sharpshooter.  I think I have eye problems.
IMG_6497
I won’t say it…
IMG_6537
Descending (ascending?) into heaven of the winery of Alex Gambal, a passionate winemaker doing amazing things with nature and knowledge

Alex Gambal sharing his great burgundy from the cask
IMG_6527
Ray, you can put the glass down for the photo at least. There’s plenty more of that behind us.

A hugely memorable lunch at one of the finest places in town with students from the École hôtelière de Lausanne. Thank you Thomas Winslow for the invitation! And what a finish to an extraordinary weekend!  Did we dream this?  Thanks so much Denis and Susan!
